I don’t know about you but I have a whole lot of things going on. And my brain is just not that fast. This comic is from direct experience of noticing my brain ‘catching up’ in interactions with co-workers. Generally I’m able to catch the thread by the 4th panel.
Context switching is when you switch focus from one task to another - and there’s a cognitive hit. It takes time for your brain to remember what that other task was about and reassemble the context around it. In my line of work it’s a serious problem and accounts for 50-75% of my time during an average workday (ok, ok, that’s a *slight* exaggeration - but sometimes it feels like it’s not too far off).
To help with context switching I try to keep a pretty detailed todo list and take notes that I can come back to when I switch back to the task. Of course, I end up staring at the notes thinking ‘whaaaat… what was I doing again?’ for minutes while I context switch back.
What are the tips and tricks you use to help with context switching?
